Piraeus: The Largest Port in Greece

Piraeus (ancient Greek: Peiraieus) is the third largest city in Greece after Athens and Thessaloniki, with its own regional urban area and home to the country’s most important port.

Located 12 km southwest of central Athens, Piraeus stretches to the northeast coast of the Saronic Gulf. Today, it is the largest commercial and passenger port in Greece, welcoming at least 20 million visitors annually. Major cruise ships dock here, bringing visitors from all over the world. Due to its size, strategic location, and Greece’s age-old relationship with the sea, Piraeus has developed into a major international shipping and maritime center.

Here you can visit museums such as the Archaeological Museum and the Hellenic Maritime Museum, as well as important monuments, including sections of the 5th-century BC walls, remains of ancient temples and buildings, and modern structures such as the neoclassical Municipal Theater, early 20th-century industrial buildings, preserved neoclassical mansions, and impressive modern constructions like the Peace and Friendship Stadium and the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium.
